On Friday night Jo and I attended the Bishop's Italian Night. Just one of his many events for the week in a large Marquee in the Bishop's garden. 'Bishops House' does not have a number so even the Sat-Nav did not get us there the first time. I usually put '1' when I don't know the number, but #1 in that road is actually not on that road!!
Bishop Laurie has an injured back, and the trek from the house was clearly painful. Once sitting he returned to his old self, and told us about the importance of reader ministry, and some of the history of it. Readers are mentioned as early as 200AD, when they are sometimes called sub-deacons, but the ministry is almost identical.
Friday was a cold day, and the tent was heated as a result. The caterers supplied a very nice Italian meal, and we chatted with friend we hadn't seen for a quite a while. Readers from other churches that we have visited or trained in, Readers we trained with and readers from our own parish.
A very enjoyable evening.
There is a picture of the Bishop here.
