Flixton, 10 October 2021 - Grey and White

Saturday

Yesterday was a travel day, but unusually, we did not leave until about 5:30pm because of child care requirements.  Leaving in dull daylight, we drove north as the sun was setting.  By the time we arrived at the Old Rectory, Flixton, it was fully dark.  That meant it was difficult to see the tiny signs on the side of the road, because they were facing the road, not the traffic.  Thankfully, Google Maps is pretty accurate, so we only passed the entrance by about 50 metres.  We drove slowly up the drive, through the trees and into a gravel covered courtyard lit by old-style sodium lamps screwed to various parts of the building.  Suddenly there was a guy standing next to the car, we didn't hear him approach across the stones.

Keith is our host, he showed us down the steep steps to a divided courtyard, and into the Butler's Pantry.  He showed us around the space.  We unloaded, and got Brody down the steps, persuading him not to jump down the last four or five of the 13 steps.

Sunday

Sunday morning we were up early due to 'wuf    ....    wuf ....wuf' coming from the lounge.  So, still in the dark, we go upstairs so that Brody can do what he needs to and then down again and back to bed.

Why I don't like wet rooms

Apart from the usual minor difficulties working a strange shower, we also had to deal with the wet room.  There are a number of problems:

  • The toilet gets wet
  • After a shower, the room is wet for hours - all day, so your shoes walk the dampness out of the toilet all day.  This cannot be hygienic.
  • The towel gets damp

Sunday daytime

We went into Bungay, the nearest town, for lunch.  Parking is good value around Bungay, the sort of charges that you don't mind paying.  Not much was open.  We found a café near the castle - Bigod's Kitchen, and ordered the Bigod's Salad.  A big bowl of salad covered with chicken and bacon, a good meal.  They were so friendly and looked after Brody well.

It was not a good day for exploring, with gentle rain or maybe heavy drizzle for a while, and very dull.  We returned to the 'cottage' and later explored St. Mary's church and the grounds that the Rectory is set in.
