Veryan Day 5 - Street Food

The morning started with the need for supplies, so we walked into Veryan and bought a few things:
  • A local extract of O/S Explorer sheet 105 which it would have been good to find on the first day.
  • Milk
  • Sunflower Sour bread, which looked interesting and we will probably try it for breakfast.
  • A ball thrower for Brody, to join the other two at home that get little or no use now, this one was to throw the ball into the sea to get him swimming.
  • A new book of local walks, including maps.
Distance 2.47km

We returned to the cottage and Brody went to bed - I think he's finding all this walking a bit of a strain.  Today will prove more so.  We drove to St. Antony's Head, opposite Pendennis Castle, and took a walk around to the Church of St Antony and back around the head.  We did not know why it was so busy, people lined the head with binoculars looking out to sea.  There were three enormous yachts just off the coast running some sort of trial. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the coastal path, and the lanes and tracks across country.  The Church of St. Antony is attached to a big house called 'Place'.  On the last leg of the journey our intrepid exploring dog found his way down to the beach, despite both our frantic / annoyed calls.  He had jumped off, or scrambled down a mini-cliff (about 10 feet).  When he was called back he strolled along the strand line picking things to eat.  Eventually I encouraged him up high enough to pull him up, as he got his footing he pushed me aside and I almost fell down the cliff. Fortunately there was a rope fixed to the top to allow people to pull themselves up, which I used without much trouble.
Just before all this excitement I had tripped on something and ended up almost puncturing my sandals from the top, missing my toes by less than a millimetre.
We were glad to get back to the car.

Distance 6.01km

Beginning the drive back, looking for somehere to eat we came to this:
The thought was intriguing, so we stopped to see what was there.  Unfortunately for us almost everything was gone (good business, but bad for the late comers, it was approaching 3pm).  We settled for pastie and crisps.  The pastie was much hotter, larger and meatier than yesterday's.  I found I enjoyed it, perhaps I was just really hungry.  The cornish tea was good too.  The gluten free brownie wasn't that great - too damp.
This is the pop-up café. I thought the woman had moved far enough, but I can't be bothered to cut her out of the picture tonight. Maybe later.

While sitting eating, in what looked like someone's driveway, we noticed several people go through the 'garage' entrance.  Turns out it is the footpath to Towan beach.  What a lovely beach.  I played with Brody for about an hour, with the new ball thrower.  The beach is sandy with just the occasional stone.  I threw the ball into the water and he swam out and got it.  We stopped when he was starting to look tired.
Returning to Veryan the poor tired dog received a bath - to get the salt out of his fur.  He has also been drinking a lot, to get the salt out of his system, with the usual results.

Wednesday is Fish & Chip van day in Veryan. This time we drove down - to ensure the fish and chips returned hot.  There was a queue, but not a long one, so we were soon back enjoying fish and chips on the patio, listening to the sounds of the palms, birds and tonight, for the first time, gulls.  Enjoying a bottle of Hobgoblin too.

Now supper is farmhouse cheese  and Sunflower Sour bread, so I didn't have to wait 'til morning.
